It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its remarkable biodiversity, particularly its population of the endangered one-horned rhinoceros. Formed in 1908 on the recommendation of Mary Curzon, the park is located on the edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots – Golaghat and Nagaon districts. It covers an area of approximately 430 square kilometers (166 square miles).
